About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Washington, DC’s vibrant 17th Street NW corridor, Hana Market is a charming Japanese and Asian grocery haven that offers an authentic taste of Japan right in the city. This cozy supermarket stands out not only for its thoughtfully curated selection of Japanese staples but also for the warm, inviting atmosphere that draws in a loyal following of locals and expats alike.

Hana Market’s star attraction is undoubtedly its freshly made onigiri — traditional Japanese rice balls that are crafted daily with care and precision. Customers rave about their quality and flavor, with Siu-Mei Man sharing how she couldn’t resist grabbing multiple onigiris in different flavors like salmon and ume, each bite delivering the perfect balance of savory and tangy notes wrapped in tender, sticky rice. Emil Bissoondharry echoes this sentiment, highlighting the affordability and authenticity of the salmon onigiris, priced at just $3.50 each, a true bargain for such a lovingly prepared snack.

Beyond onigiri, the shelves are lined with a variety of Japanese and Asian groceries — from traditional snacks and candies to specialty ingredients that are often hard to find elsewhere in DC. Customers like Desmond Wilson appreciate the shop’s ambiance and staff, who create a welcoming environment that allows shoppers to explore at their own pace while offering expert guidance when needed. The nostalgic feeling of being “back in Japan” permeates the space, making it a haven for those longing for an authentic taste of home or adventurous eaters looking to discover Japanese flavors.

The vibe of Hana Market is described by many as friendly and intimate, reminiscent of small neighborhood grocery shops in Japan. Matt Endaya notes the cozy size of the store and the attentiveness of its staff, cautioning that it isn’t suited for large groups, but perfect for a quiet, personal shopping experience. Supplementing the onigiri, unique treats such as refreshing melon soda are beloved by patrons like C Ross, showing the variety and charm of the store’s offerings.

What truly elevates Hana Market from a typical grocery store to a beloved community gem is its commitment to authenticity, quality, and customer care. The owner’s hospitality and the team’s genuine warmth create a space where fresh ingredients, affordable prices, and cultural connection come together seamlessly. Whether you’re craving a comforting bite of Japanese rice balls, sourcing ingredients for a special recipe, or simply exploring an authentic slice of Japanese culinary culture, Hana Market promises a richly satisfying experience that keeps visitors coming back for more.

For those in Washington, DC, seeking a dependable, nostalgic, and authentic Japanese food shopping destination, Hana Market is a must-visit. Its blend of fresh, flavorful offerings and heartfelt service makes it much more than a grocery store — it’s a little pocket of Japan waiting to be discovered.

I heard Hana had fresh made onigiri made daily. So I had to try it. The lady standing line to checkout told me she ate an onigiri in the car and came back in to get another one. I ended up buying 4 - the salmon and the ume flavor. They were great

It’s a nice and cozy shop at a great location and the staff allow you to shop in peace then I was able to ask questions etc. since I lived in Japan before I was appreciative for the taste of nostalgia. Good selection as if I were in Japan

I was craving onigiri since I got back from Japan and found this cute little market that makes fresh onigiri in the morning. The owner of the store was extremely hospitable and friendly welcoming us into the store. Two salmon onigiris for $7.00, can’t beat that. Contains a lot of the snacks and candies you can find in Japan and it is cheaper here than places like H-Mart. I went right when it opened and there is a limited amount of onigiri so would recommend going early in case they run out. Def will be back for the onigiri!

A small but really cozy spot! Missed japan so much so I tried looking for a spot around DC to fill in the hole and this definitely did the job. Really attentive and kind staff. Wouldn’t recommend coming in big groups as it’s a really tight space. Bought onigiri as well which tasted amazing! Prices were very reasonable too.

A small Japanese grocery store with a lot of good groceries. The place has a small step to get in but my electric wheelchair had the power to do it. Once inside the aisles not goose for chairs and many boxes 8n the way. I was greatful that a staff help me get all of the items I needed. All of the staff was friendly and helpful going out of there way to make my experience a good one. I highly recommend people to support local grocery store in our community. Thank you Hana Market.

Hana Market is one of those rare places that makes you feel instantly transported to Japan the moment you walk through the door. It may be small, but every inch is filled with care, quality, and authenticity. The owner and staff are incredibly kind and knowledgeable — always ready to help you find what you’re looking for or recommend something new. You can tell this shop is a labor of love, serving the community for decades while keeping that traditional charm intact.

Visited the place yesterday and they had such a selection of items to choose from I got so overwhelmed. Ended up getting a creamy mango soda and 4 salmon Onigiri which were absolutely おいしい (delicious). The kind of place you could stay for literal hours just looking at all the stuff despite the small size! 10/10 would be visiting again!
